Nigerian art has been in museums for centuries but it is not in Nigerian museums that it lays but in the hands of the Europeans they are the ones that hold the key to the history of Nigerian art. The Europeans have taken part of  Nigeria has been suppressed by the British therefore the art is not completely Nigerian. The Nigerian colonization had a negative impact on African art.

The Nigerian artists were suppressed.  The Nigerians were suppressed when the colonization occurred then British ideals were imposed on the Nigerians and they took up the British way of art it was the way the Nigerian children were taught so they did not know any different. Although the Nigerians were suppressed there original art and culture have made a comeback due to the museums giving back some of the culture and objects they had had before the time. Now that some of the traditional Nigerian art has been returned it is easier to make new art based on the old techniques. One person named Onobulu is a current artist he is good at making traditional art (Modern Nigerian Art: A Sketch).   Still, there was a delay in the adaptations of art over time and so it will take a while to classify art as “Nigerian Art” with confidence.

The Europeans all took the Nigerian’s art and put it in museums.  Nigerians have been hurt by the crisis but its art being stolen from the place it should be it should most definitely be with the Nigerians inspiring new artists but, most of it is with Europeans. This is unjust to the Nigerian people. “In the basements of countless European museums, there are stacked shelves of African ‘curios’- Objects taken from the {Nigerian}people but seldom documented”(100, Harmon, Daniel E.). In other words the Europeans took art pieces and put them in museums without permission.

The Nigerian people have had valuable art taken from them from the Europeans. This is not fair to them nor would it be to anyone. The Nigerians had their art taken away and it was very important for them to have that art so that their art could develop. Now even though it has taken a while traditional art is coming back this helps the Nigerian art come back tremendously.
